A medical examiner blamed a 17-year-old track star's death on the use of too much anti-inflammatory muscle cream, the kind used to soothe aching legs after exercise.
Arielle Newman, a cross-country runner at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island, died after her body absorbed high levels of methyl salicylate, an anti-imflammatory found in sports creams such as Bengay and Icy Hot, the New York City medical examiner said Friday.
The medical examiner's spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove, said the teen used "topical medication to excess."
Our question: If a topical medication used to excess can be fatal, at what level does it become toxic? The FDA has obviously not tested the toxicity levels of this common anti-inflammatory. There is very little discussion of how readily topical ingredients enter the bloodstream, or whether there should be warnings about ingredients used topically that have not been tested for internal use.
The MSM in Novaurora Weekend Warrior Balm is safe for internal use. It has been used safely for over 20 years. Novaurora invited to join Boulder Innovation Center
In March 2008 Aurora Nova, LLC (dba Novaurora Organic Skin Care) has been invited to join the Boulder Innovation Center, a consulting group designed to support the growth of fledgling companies in Boulder and Boulder County. Aurora Nova's owner, Pam Lambert, will be working with volunteer sponsors and coaches from the area to define and plan for the company's expansion from local to regional, and eventually to a national brand.
